You Asked, We Answered!

Last month, we asked you to send us any questions you had for our stylists, and we got some wonderful, thoughtful questions in return. We chose three questions to answer below that we thought would be useful to a lot of women. If you have a question of your own, email us at hello@cakestyle.com and you could be featured here next month!

little black dress

“What are three pieces every girl needs in her wardrobe?”

-Joanna C., San Francisco

A little (but not too little) black dress, a tailored black blazer, and a pair of simple yet stylish (but not painful) black heels. Why all black, you ask? Black is so versatile and can be dressed up or down, plus it goes with practically anything. So as far as stable pieces go, black is all-encompassing.

“I have D-cup breasts, which are big enough for me, so I don’t like when my clothes make them look bigger. What can I do to minimize my bust?”

-Mary S., Boston

We hear this from lots of women, so thanks for asking! We recommend dark-colored solid tops, v-necks, double-breasted blazers, and bold accessories like earrings or bangles (NO big necklaces) to minimize your bust. Avoid tight-fitting tops (but don’t go baggy either), accessories that draw attention to the chest, and bright tops with bold patterns, since these draw more attention to the chest.

I’m petite in every way. What are the best ways to complement my figure without making me look girlish?

-Anna T., Memphis

The key to dressing as a petite woman is to never choose clothes that make you look shorter. Wearing heels is a no-brainer - it gives you a sophisticated look, plus a boost in height. Be wary of long tops and booties that hit right at the ankle, as both of these shorten your legs. Shorts, skirts, and high-waisted pants are always great. Also avoid boots that hit right at the ankle; go for mid-calf or just below the knee for a lengthening look. The short answer? Loose-fitting top + high-waisted skirt + heels = petite bombshell.
