Elements of Style | Lighting

The style of lighting you use in a room (or outdoors!) is just as important as the color of the walls, the furniture, or the artwork you display. It can make or break a room, which is why we took so much care choosing amazing lamps for the CakeStyle office - we needed to see our pieces in the best light, literally!

We’ve selected a few photos to use for inspiration for both indoor and outdoor lighting. Brighten up your home or light your yard for a summer party with these cool ideas!

Indoor Lighting

These lamp chandeliers are the perfect combination of classy and rustic. We love the soft glow and the warm brassy color of the chandelier itself.

This canvas decal board is technically DIY, but we aren’t sure we’re talented enough to do it well. However, if you’re patient and want to give it a try, it adds a subtly gorgeous quality to the lighting in your home.

A cluster of bowl-shaped glass lamps adds great bright light to a kitchen. This can also be done with frosted glass for a softer look.

Outdoor Lighting

Lanterns made with glass bottles and holiday lights are a great way to light up your yard for summertime festivities, and super easy to set up. Go for clear glass and white lights for a simple, classy look, or choose colored lights for something a little more fun.

Hang tea lights from trees with brightly colored ribbons and your yard or patio will be immediately enhanced by a lovely flickering glow.

Gorgeous, Unexpected Color Combos

It’s easy to match traditional color combos or always pair your bright colors with neutrals. But it can be a bit more of a challenge to step outside the box and create an outfit that mixes shades in a unique way.

Since we spend hours every day in a room full of gorgeous pieces of all shades, we took some time to put together gorgeous colors that you don’t normally see. We’ve done all the work - now it’s your turn to try wearing them! Here are our top three unexpected color combos:

1. Kelly Green & Camel

Green and brown together don’t have to make you look like a tree. This gorgeous shade of kelly green combines beautifully with the rich camel.

2. Coral & Mint

Coral and mint combine for a soft yet eye-catching look. Just be careful not to select too dark a green or too bright an orange - no one wants to dress like a plate of peas and carrots!

3. Orange, Bright Pink & Navy

This trendy tri-color set might be our favorite yet. Navy is always a gorgeous color to wear, but you can make it pop with some orange and bright pink. We especially love the pink trim on this blazer!

Trendspotting at the Met Gala

The Met Gala, the unveiling of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fashion exhibit, is hosted by Vogue and considered to be the Oscars of Fashion - it’s the red carpet event of the year. It’s always exciting when the red carpet photos are released, so as soon as they came out, our lovely CakeStylists combed through for inspiration and to see the up-and-coming trends in the fashion world. Here are their top five:

1. Capes

Capes aren’t just for vampires - in 2012, they’re for fashionistas.

2. Mini Dresses with Sheer Overlay

It’s part mini, part maxi… but all sexy.

3. Human Statue

It’s not easy wearing gold from head to toe, but these ladies get it right.

4. Asymmetry

Traditionally, symmetry equates beauty. But who wants to be traditional?

5. Yellow Peplum

Canary has never been so in.

Which trend from the Met Gala is your favorite? Tweet us @cakestyleme and let us know!

Design Your Dog

You love CakeStyle, so obviously you’re a fashionable lady. But is your pup up to snuff? Let your dog express his style (okay, your style) with his accessories, toys, furniture, and more, and show your love for your dog in your home’s decorations, too! Below are a few inspirational dog-related items we love - find more at Dog Milk, the dog-centric design blog from Design Milk.

gorgeous collars & leads

We adore this graphic collar and leash set from See Scout Sleep. This environmentally conscious company uses safe, local materials and donates 10% of its proceeds to the Gulf Coast Fund (they’re based in Louisiana). What’s not to love?

Another excellent collar and lead choice is the Tail Feathers set from Lupine Pet. The bright colors and peacock feather design are beautiful and eye-catching, plus they have several other beautiful patterns to choose from.

designer dog beds

The Bloq dog bed from Binq Design is a unique way to keep that unsightly cushion from sullying your perfect living room. Designed to look like an end table, the Bloq conceals a special compartment for your furry friend to rest his tired paws.

the world’s cutest dog toy

Adorable, right? This precious bunny plush toy from Mungo & Maud is almost too cute to let your dog destroy, but we trust you’ll be able to surrender it. But just look at his floral patterned ears!

for the human

Why let Fido have all the good stuff? Treat yourself to adorable dog-related accessories like these Knob Creek Metal Arts bookends we came across on etsy. We love the simple design combined with the tongue-in-cheek silhouettes - these are chic enough for any bookshelf.

CakeStyle Founder and CEO Cecelia Myers has a dachshund named Oscar (Oscar Meyers… get it?), which is what inspired our interest in these adorable plates from Claudia Pearson. We can’t resist ordering a few of these to decorate the CakeStyle offices!

Fresh-faced Michelle Williams has done it again. Dark, smoky eyes and bright red lipstick have their time and place, but nude lips, smooth skin, and subtle eyeshadow are beautiful for the everyday, and this star pulls it off perfectly.
1. Nude lipstick is a great way to make your lips look healthy and gorgeous without going overboard. This shade from Lancome is one of our favorites.
2. Take smoky eyes down a notch with this simple, subtle look. With black and gray blended only right along the lash line, you’ll draw attention to your eyes but still look great for daytime. We love this dual-shade eyeshadow from Dior.
3. Finish off the look with bold, dark lashes. Use mascara or, for longer, thicker lashes, try using these false eyelashes from Urban Decay. They’re easy to apply and remove!

Staying Chic on a Rainy Day

guest post by Lorraine K. Lee

Although April showers are approaching, there’s no reason to feel gloomy. Check out these reinvented classics that will help you stay fashionable in rain (and shine!). Rainy days just got a little bit brighter.

Ponchos: a thing of the past

RainRaps are a welcome alternative to the typical ponchos and jackets that are often less-than-flattering. They come in vibrant color combinations such as pink and orange or navy and turquoise, as well as darker tones like brown and bronze or black and gray – and they’re reversible, too. RainRaps are also functional, with a water-resistant layer and lightweight fabric that allows you to easily stow it away in your bag once the sun comes out.

Walk with a spring in your step

On the days where rain is lighter, try switching out your heavy rainboots for Neiman Marcus’ lace-front rubber/mesh loafer. Their rubber lining and soles will keep your feet dry and comfortable. They even come in five different colors!

Signed, sealed, delivered

Lastly, complete your outfit with a scarf by Silk by Bryony on those cooler spring days. Each scarf, made of 100 percent habotai silk, is sure to turn heads. British-born photographer Bryony Shearmur takes her outdoor photographs and hand-prints them on silk scarves, topping them off with her signature. Whether it’s a photo of cherry blossoms or the Los Angeles skyline, these limited edition, gorgeous pieces of art are sure to have a design that pleases even the pickiest of fashionistas.

Elements of Style | Interior Design

Your clothing and accessories say a lot about who you are, but so does the way you decorate your home - make sure your guests get a great first impression of who you are when they come to your house. This week, we decided to highlight a modern theme for the home; check out our favorite inspirational rooms below.

The modern…

bedroom.modern bedroom

The raw concrete on the ceiling and the curved wooden wall give this bedroom its undeniably modern look. We love the combination of textures: wood, leather, concrete and cotton combine to make a beautiful and striking statement.

bathroom.

modern bathroom

This bathroom’s appeal is in its simplicity. We especially love that the sink floats above the floor and that the shelf extends across the mirror.

balcony.

modern balcony

This staircase/balcony image is lovely. The simple, open wood stairs add space to the room, and the white potted plants outside make the balcony look appealing, comfortable, and modern.

kitchen.

Similar to the bedroom, this kitchen combines textures masterfully. The wood floor, shiny metal fridge, granite countertops, and woven rug work together well. We also love the splash of color on the yellow pantry door.

living room.

This living room is the definition of modern style. The tiled floor, simple rug, geometric fire place, and white furniture work together to balance the room and keep the eye interested.

How To Mix Patterns
Mixing and matching different patterns in one outfit is a bold statement and a trendy spring look, but there are some rules to follow if you want to pull it off well. Check out this example from our Polyvore and read the guidelines below to learn how to mix your patterns right.
1. Never wear more than two patterns. Wearing two patterns makes you look fashion-forward and trendy; more than two makes you look like a mess. Make sure that when you mix patterns, you stick to just two.
2. Pair detailed patterns with bold patterns. For example, if you’re wearing a floral pattern that has lots of small flowers, pair that with a wide stripe. Or, if you have tiny polka dots on your dress, wear a bold check or stripe pattern with it. Wearing two eye-popping bold patterns, or two intricate ones, makes for a busy, overwhelming look.
3. Pair patterns with coordinating colors. An orange and white polka dotted dress with a green striped coat and a pair of red heels is going to blind everyone who looks at you. Instead, choose colors that are coordinating or wear only one bold color with neutrals to keep your look classy.
4. No additional statement pieces. If you’re wearing two different patterns in one outfit, chances are that adding a statement collar necklace, chunky bangles or a contrasting pair of heels is going to send your outfit overboard. Your two different patterns are enough of a statement; everything else should be simple, subtle, and should complement your look.
