What’s the hot lipstick for this fall? What does it look best with, and where should we skip it?

We asked one of our CakeStylists, Lory, to answer this great question. Here’s her response:
For this fall, we’re seeing a lot of wine red shades - it’s toned down from the bright reds and oranges for the summer, but still a bold statement look. With lipstick, we’d recommend avoiding matching your lipstick to your clothes. Sure, if you’re wearing a black lace top with wine red accents, that’s fine - but don’t wear wine red lipstick and wine red skinny jeans. Never get too matchy-matchy! We also recommend avoiding pairing your lipstick with a piece it clashes with - so, with wine red, don’t pair it with a bright orange cardigan.

Wine red varies a lot - it can simply be a darker shade of hot red (which is still very bright), or it can look pretty close to a brownish-red or brick red. Spotted: CURRENT/ELLIOTT Rider Jeans Effortlessly Styled
Refinery29 recently did a piece titled Slacker Beauty: Speedy Shortcuts To Try Now. The piece shares quick beauty tricks for those mornings when you just don’t feel like getting out of bed. The cover photo for the article features a pair of CURRENT/ELLIOTT Rider Jeans, which we sell at CakeStyle! We love how these army green jeans effortlessly make a statement, with the stripe down the side giving a nod to tuxedo pants. The jeans are edgy and trendy, without trying too hard (exactly like the beauty tips in the article). We love how Refinery29 styled the look, pairing the jeans with a flowy top, gold sandals, and a simple, but interesting, necklace. It’s a great weekend look that perfectly transitions from summer to fall. Add in the hair and makeup tips from the article, and you have the perfect combination for effortless style!
Labor Day marks the end of summer, and sadly, that means it’s almost time to put away those sandals and sundresses. Fortunately, there are a few summer pieces you don’t have to hide away just yet. We’ve picked two summer staples, white jeans and black shorts, that we think will effortlessly transition your look from summer into fall.
The question of white jeans always comes up around this time - can you wear them after Labor Day? We say absolutely! As long as your styling indicates the change in seasons, don’t let this ‘rule’ stop you. The key is to pair your white jeans with items that highlight some of fall’s main trends. We’ve chosen a chunky sweater, ankle booties, and a bold collar necklace. And don’t forget the wine-colored nail polish, of course!
The next transition piece we’ve chosen is a pair of black shorts. The key to wearing shorts into fall is the material and the color palette. Make sure your shorts are a heavier weight - a thick linen, wool, or cotton is good. It’s also important that the color is not too summery. Avoid lightweight shorts in pastel colors - you’ll have a hard time making them look seasonally appropriate.
Here we’ve gone with a black cotton and silk blend. We love the panels on the sides of these shorts - they add an element of trendiness and edge to the look. As with the white jeans, in order to make these shorts work for fall, we’ve paired them with some of the season’s biggest trends, a jewel-toned blouse and studded flats. This ensemble would also look great with tights and a blazer when the weather starts getting colder.
One of our dresses recently made an appearance on the Today Show! Jenna Wolfe was spotted wearing the Elie Tahari Henderson Dress, which we sell at CakeStyle.
We love how Jenna paired the dress with a simple necklace and bracelet, since the cobalt blue and chartreuse detail make such a statement on their own. We took notes from Jenna when styling the dress ourselves, pairing it with one of our simple, classy Dana Rebecca necklaces in rose gold. We also added some studded chartreuse heels to complete the look.

“Can you wear shoes that match the color of your dress? Not black-on-black, but something like a cobalt blue dress with cobalt blue shoes.”—Sara, Chicago
We asked one of our CakeStylists, Kait, to tackle this question. Here’s what she had to say:
“We actually love mixing in different hues with your shoes because it’s refreshing! We do not like matching your shoes to your dress - it looks weird. Our rule would be to wear the darker hue on top and the lighter hue on the bottom, and the more extreme the color difference, the better! Don’t try to wear colors that are really close in hue - it will look like they’re trying to match.”
Based on Kait’s solid advice, we came up with the example above: a deep purple Peter Som tweed sheath dress with three different colors of heels you could wear with it. We think a cherry red, a light mint green, or a bright chartreuse pair of shoes would work well with this subdued shade of purple.

When August rolls around, many of us start longing for boots, sweaters, scarves, and everything else that comes with fall (pumpkin lattes, anyone?). Even though we have a month or more of hot weather left, it’s not too early to start picking up the next season’s trends. For fall, we’re looking at two things: leather and lace. Leather
Leather jackets are nothing new, but for this season we expect to see them paired with extra-feminine materials (think floaty neutrals or lace).
